Helmut Lang 'Boyscout' top from S/S 1997. In excellent used condition with minor signs of wear. Made in Italy.
Helmut Lang's S/S 1997 collection was a tremendous success that further solidified his status as the quiet avant-garde spirit of his generation. Focusing on the refinement of his personal vision rather than seasonal novelty, Lang showed his characteristic mix of clubwear-inspired separates, sharp suiting and sophisticated eveningwear. Subtle decorative applications brought forth an element of unforeseen abstraction: Solid rubber stripes and satin sashes in bold colours evoked graphic modernity; deconstructed elements and abbreviated shapes were wrapped around the models' bodies, confusing and enticing the viewer; nylon trims gave a sport-inspired urgency to sober fitted lines. In addition, this collection marks the large scale introduction of Helmut Lang's iconic 'Jeans' label.
This exceptionally rare piece features a directional 'Boyscout' print in bold condensed font. Boyscouts were one of the 1997 runway presentation's underlying themes, as seen in the wide sashes decorating the models and various types of short-sleeve military shirts (picture: seasonal advertisement shot by Bruce Weber). Lang explored this further for S/S 1998 with his 'Summercamp' series of basics. The print's eye-catching and unexpectedly playful design will remind Lang collectors of his iconic 'Cowboy' top from S/S 2004. Still, this piece is considerably harder to find and was produced in very limited numbers. The back features a 'Helmut Lang Jeans' print.
The piece is crafted from soft medium weight cotton jersey with a high thread count that gives it a smooth hand. It has a sharp slim cut with a narrow shoulderline and a slightly elongated body. The side seams spiral towards the right, enhancing the drape of the piece when it is worn. Such details were incredibly ahead of their time in 1997 and can be seen in several Helmut Lang basics from this period. Finally, the crew neckline is finished with ribbed trim.
This is a rare opportunity to acquire an iconic and hard-to-find basic from Lang's S/S 1997 collection. Lang's prints have become a strong source of inspiration for a plethora of contemporary designers, and this piece does his reputation justice. In addition, it is a true collector's item that is unlikely to resurface again.
