Carrying on from the previous winter collection, S/S 2013 focused on the formal aspects of the Burberry Man through an emphasis on sharp tailoring and timeless proportions. However, this time Christopher Bailey juxtaposed the formality of the outfits with unexpected and eye-popping splashes of colour. This timeless sweater is a more sober alternative to the extravagant metallic knitwear shown on the runway, but maintains a distinctive elegance through its opulent fabric and intricate knit patterns.
The sweater is realised in an exquisite 70% cashmere/30% silk yarn in an understated iris blue colour. While being soft and smooth enough to be worn without an underlayer, the yarn's silk content gives it a graceful luster. These precious materials complement the sweater's sharp and precise cut with a fitted upper body, narrow shoulders and slim set-in sleeves. The neck has a wide crew shape with a long ribbed neckline. The waistline and cuffs are finished with similar oversized ribbing. The knit has a fully fashioned construction, with each individual piece being knit to its exact shape in a process similar to hand knitting. This process is much more expensive than typical cut-and-sew knitwear and undoubtedly superior in terms of longevity.
Most interestingly, the knit exhibits numerous pattern variations that add a very luxurious and refined edge to its streamlined design. A superbly executed drop-stitch detail can be found around the neck, shoulders and armholes, subtly revealing what is worn underneath. Similar detailing can be found on the sides of the waistline. The top section of the sleeve cap is decorated a raised edge that surrounds the shoulders. Likewise, the ribbed parts of the cuffs and waist are finished with an intricate border that further demonstrates the piece's tremendous craftsmanship. All ribbed panels are part of the same knit as the body, resulting in a natural drape without excessive bulk. Likewise, the Prorsum label on the neck is attached by hand to prevent the seams from showing on the outside when the knit stretches.
A versatile classic with beautiful detailing and an extremely luxurious fabric, this effortless and finely crafted piece will add a subtle and elegant splash of colour into any sophisticated outfit.
