A/W 2012-2013 exemplified Christopher Bailey's love for the traditional heritage of the British countryside. A variety of quintessentially British classics such as tweedy wool outerwear and waxed cotton field jackets complemented fitted skirts and oversized knitwear. Despite the formality of his inspiration, Bailey managed to artfully merge retro detailing and fabrics with the romantic modernity that is synonymous with Burberry Prorsum. The subversion of proportions is one of the ways this modernity is manifested in Bailey's output, and this cropped bomber jacket encapsulates his playful approach.
The jacket is constructed from a heavy wool fabric in a refined Prince of Wales check. Its dense weave gives the jacket a sculptural quality that complements its unique architectural cut. The front has a double-breasted closure with oversized peak lapels and a high stand-up collar, which feels like. The exaggerated proportions of the lapels in combination with the high cropped waistline produce a unique top-heavy silhouette that is extremely elegant and effortlessly sporty at the same time. The shoulders feature chunky epaulettes, while the waist has buttoned flap pockets that are adorned with luxurious bridle leather trims. The waist is finished with narrow virgin wool ribbing. The back has an ornate fixed pleat and features a similar leather accent. Furthermore, the jacket is entirely filled with down, making it very warm and a pleasure to wear.
In addition to its statement cut, the jacket has an abundance of well thought-out details that demonstrate its high quality and Bailey's terrific attention to detail. The lapel edges are sewn together by hand, like in traditional mens' tailoring. The underside of the collar features intricate curvilinear and geometrical topstitching. The shoulders have an interesting double layered construction, and the sleeves are gently gathered at the cuffs, which close with snap buttons engraved with the Burberry Prorsum logo. The chunky buttons on the front are made from genuine buffalo horn. The leather accents are finely edged like traditional leather goods. The interior is fully lined in a luscious silky satin in royal blue, and the neck is adorned with Prorsum's signature heavy pull chain.
Overall, this exquisite runway piece is an apt demonstration of Christopher Bailey's heritage-driven experimentation. It successfully combines exquisite detailing and traditional craftsmanship with a unique cut, and it will definitely become a key wardrobe staple.
