S/S 2011 was another grand success for Burberry and Christopher Bailey. Many of A/W 2010-2011's signature pieces were stripped down and decorated with leather trims and iconic biker detailing. This directional jacket is equally inspired by military and biker uniforms, with an abundance of interesting and luxurious details. Many of the season's characteristic features are present, from the sharp multi-panelled construction to the ornate oversized metal hardware.
The cut is trim and structured, with a defined upper body, slim sleeves and a short tapered waist. The fabric is a substantial washed denim with a hand-applied vintage treatment that gives a rugged elegance to the piece. The front has an elaborate construction and fastens with heavyweight tack buttons and an oversized hook-and-eye closure. The neck features a chunky collar that can stand-up. Buttoned patch pockets with pleats adorn the chest, while the waist has horizontal welt pockets. On the back, a complex construction gives the jacket a three-dimensional shape. The lower part has a biker-inspired curvilinear panel and features the season's signature oversized metal hooks. These distinctive elements are inspired by the hook-and-eye neck closures of trench coats, and can function as belt loops. Please note that the jacket is not meant to be worn with a belt. The sharp top-heavy look is finished with military epaulettes.
Like all Prorsum outerwear, this piece is distinguished by its astounding craftsmanship and attention to detail. Despite its skinny silhouette, the jacket's ingenious construction allows for surprising ease of movement. On the front, four sets of vertical pleats give a fluidity to the cut. On the back, an intricately layered construction allows the upper back to subtly expand when the arms stretch. The jacket's contoured fit is further enhanced by pleats on the lower back waist and front chest. All hardware is realised in a slightly contrasting bronze gold hue and has been treated for a darkened antique finish. The chunky buttons feature textured branded engravings. Prorsum's signature oversized pull chain adorns the neck.
The precision of the jacket's construction is evident throughout, from the sharp lines of the front to the meticulous rectangular stitches that secure the front pleats. Likewise, the undercollar features sharp geometrical decoration, while the waist tabs are secured by X-shaped stitching. The interior is flawlessly finished with flat-fell seams throughout, while the shoulders and pockets are bound in burnt orange cotton. Essentially, the jacket's exquisite finishing makes it completely reversible.
This statement piece is a deft demonstration of Christopher Bailey's heritage-driven vision, while its quality is second to none and unmistakably Prorsum. Its severe and directional aesthetic will add a touch of aggressive luxury to any sophisticated casual outfit.
