S/S 2011 was another grand success for Burberry and Christopher Bailey. Many of A/W 2010-2011's signature military-inspired pieces were stripped down and decorated with leather trims and iconic biker detailing. Tim Blanks writes:
'Christopher Bailey's trip to the Burberry archives last season helped him to the best men's collection of his career with the company, and he hit pay dirt again with Spring's return visit. A stash of early twentieth-century biker gear designed by the very forward-thinking Thomas Burberry gave him the idea for his "heritage biker" collection. It was another spectacular outing. Bailey may have made his rep with collections that leaned toward wistful melancholia, but the harder he goes, the better the clothes seem to get. [...] Fall's precise military-influenced tailoring was still obvious in khaki trenches and naval officer's coats, but here they'd been given details like leather epaulettes and studded belts.' (our emphasis)
This statement piece channels the collection's modern adaptation of traditional military garments. Inspired by the classic military tunic, the jacket features four patch pockets and a stand-up collar with a short lapel. The fabric is a strong medium-weight canvas with a structured drape. Chunky epaulettes give definition to the fitted shoulders and a removable trench-style belt reinforces the military aesthetic. On the vented back, an intricate multi-panelled construction with several pleats creates a sharp three-dimensional silhouette. The masculine design is offset by luxurious metal hardware and directional details: The front closes with chunky snap buttons while the waist is decorated with the collection's signature vintage belt hooks, inspired by the hook-and-eye neck closures of trench coats.
The detailing of this piece is quintessential Prorsum, with an emphasis on structure and military elements. Heavy triangular stitching adorns the undersides of the collar and lapel. Similar precision is evident in the geometric shapes of the pockets, finished with ornate pleats. The belt features a handcrafted leather buckle and gold metal eyelets. Two darts shape the body on the front, while reinforced panels on the sleeve hems and sides of the jacket create additional structure. All snap buttons are painted to a tonal sand colour and are engraved with the Burberry Prorsum logo.
