Burberry Prorsum's A/W 2011-2012 collection had no distinct theme. Instead, Christopher Bailey sought to explore the garments most representative of Burberry's outdoors heritage: Military outerwear. Bailey stated: 'As a nation, we have this obsession with the weather, and I wanted to explore that, and to celebrate the coat.' With Burberry's heritage-driven visual language as the starting point, Bailey completely reinvented classic styles by experimenting with proportions and fabrics. In our view, this resulted in some of his most interesting creations for men. Tim Blanks writes:
'[Bailey] decided on a coat for all seasons as his theme for Fall 2011, and that's exactly what he offered. [...] The Main Event was The Coat in weights that were variously suitable for rain or wind or snow. Here's testament to focus—just as with Bailey's aviator jacket collection last Fall, almost every single coat was an object of lust.'
One of the collection's most expensive items, this coat is set apart from typical outerwear in its unsurpassed attention to detail and extremely luxurious hand-finished construction. Elevating Burberry Prorsum's tailoring heritage to its most sophisticated, Christopher Bailey has created a sartorial work of art that will impress even the most discerning customer.
Borrowing elements from Victorian frock coats, the coat has a double breasted closure with a beautifully tailored waist. Bailey's signature narrow button stance and chunky stand-up collar give the piece a modern feel, while the curly shearling detail, five button cuffs and martingale evoke old-fashioned British luxury. The back has an astounding construction with a long inverted pleat at the center surrounded by fixed pleats, producing a striking three-dimensional silhouette that delicately echoes the lines of the body. A thick leather rope martingale further defines the ornate back, creating a gathered effect. The fabric is robust wool cashmere felt with a soft fleecy texture. The cut is slim on the body, with strong shoulders and high armholes for a sharp and flattering shape.
Upon a closer inspection, it becomes evident that no compromise has been made in the detailing and finishing of this piece. The season's signature heavy luggage stitching highlights the coat's seams, adding a subtle point of visual interest. All buttons are made from genuine buffalo horn with beautiful tonal variations, and are engraved with the Burberry Prorsum logo. The lapels are attached to the collar with meticulous hand-stitches, while military topstitching decorates the wool felt undercollar. The coat's long vent at the back secures with four buttons, which are artfully revealed thanks to the precise construction of the central pleat. The coat's interior is spectacular, combining extravagant luxury with utility. Fully padded for extra warmth, the lining features intricate triangular and diamond-shaped quilting. Besides having two large chest pockets, the interior sports snap-buttoned tabs that can be used to secure earphone cables. Finally, the sleeve linings and hem edges are sewn by hand.
We strongly believe this coat is one of the most exemplary garments in Burberry's recent history. While looking strikingly luxurious it is also versatile, very warm and feels pleasant to wear. All in all, it has the credentials for becoming a true long-term favourite.
