A/W 2011 is widely seen as one of the most succesful Rick Owens collections in recent years, with Tim Blanks describing it as '[possibly] his best collection yet ... and undoubtedly his most elegant'. Taking inspiration from the opulence of mid-century Hollywood, Owens delivered an exquisite collection that forms the perfect intersection between resolute classicism and his iconic avant-garde forms. The 'Maria duvet' jacket was inspired by a 1937 design by American couturier Charles James. The cut is completely three-dimensional and combines familiar Rick Owens details (such as the peplum waist, knit sleeve inserts and longer back) with an architectural construction that creates a surreal angelic silhouette. Owens first explored this spectacular shape in his S/S 2004 Citroen collection.
This coat is one of the most fascinating women's garments we have ever sold, and its quality and attention to detail are second to none. First of all, an incredibly luxurious 100% silk Duchesse fabric is used for both the exterior and the interior. This precious fabric has a luscious texture and dull luster. Its dense weave makes it extremely substantial and completely different from ordinary silk fabrics in terms of weight and volume. The fabric's structured drape complements the coat's three-dimensional cut and feels incredibly luxurious to wear. The sleeves are lined in super-smooth 100% silk satin, while the ribbed sleeve inserts are made from soft 100% virgin wool. The front closes with a heavy Italian-made metal zipper. Overall, all materials and finishes are exquisite and set this piece apart from cheaper Rick Owens coats and most designer garments in general.
Upon a closer inspection, it is evident that the coat's construction is executed to a couture standard, with a lot of handwork and considerate effort put into even the most minute details. All seams are razor sharp and precisely follow the abstract lines of the pattern. The intricate 'winged' detail on the shoulders and sleeves is mainly attached by hand. On the interior, all seams are concealed and essentially make the coat reversible. Furthermore, all parts of the coat feature padding that makes the coat very warm and extremely comfortable to wear.
In short, this garment is a modern fashion masterpiece. Its avant-garde lines and exquisite materials are a true demonstration of Rick Owens at his finest. In an age where 'high fashion' is reduced to printed T-shirts, this coat is a true investment piece that lets its supreme quality and luxurious materials speak for themselves. We imagine this beautiful piece to be worn by an elegant Hollywood diva, and then passed on to her children or donated to a fashion museum.
