A/W 2010-2011 was one of Burberry's most coveted collections in recent years, with almost every signature design becoming a highly coveted object of lust. Inspired by aviator and workwear classics, Christopher Bailey expressed the rugged and aggressive sides of the Burberry man and created one of the most copied collections of the decade. This peacoat is the collection's most coveted and renown piece, and sold out within a few weeks. It was featured in Burberry's seasonal campaign and numerous magazine editorials, and worn by a considerable number of famous celebrities. Its tremendous success can be attributed to its statement design, that combines a classic inspiration with extremely refined details that result in a truly unique and timeless piece.
Everything about this coat is astounding, from its completely three-dimensional construction to the spectacular fabric and exquisite detailing. The cut is slim and flattering, with defined shoulders, slim sleeves and a gently tapered waist that follows the lines of the body. The fabric is a heavy wool twill with a felted texture and dry hand. Its substantial weight and dense weave enhance the coat's structured cut, giving it an almost sculptural appearance. The styling is extremely sharp with a double-breasted closure and oversized peak lapels that elegantly engulf the neck when the collar is worn up. The season's signature antique gold buttons give the coat a vintage nonchalance, while heavy briddle leather chin straps frame the collar for an aggressive military edge. The back features numerous pleats and a buttoned martingale, while the cuffs feature six buttons.
Like all Prorsum outerwear, the coat is supremely constructed and features an abundance of well thought-out details. On the front, a multi-panelled construction with reinforced seams produces precise geometrical shapes. The peak lapels are sewn together by hand, while the stiff bridle leather trims are finely hand-edged like all traditionally made leather goods. The heavy strap buckles are engraved with the Burberry logo and the undercollar features military triangular topstitching. A spectacular inverted pleat adorns the upper back, framed by two smaller fixed pleats. The razor-sharp lines flawlessly develop into a series of ornate fixed knife pleats towards the waist, which give the back a very elegant contoured shape. The vent fastens with four buttons. The interior is fully lined in black jacquard sateen on the body and pinstriped sateen on the sleeves. The lining is attached by hand on the shoulders and the hem is hand-finished. The neck features Burberry's signature chunky hanging chain in the same antique gold finish as the buttons.
Overall, this is a beautiful garment that is unmistakably Prorsum in its heritage references, extremely luxurious finishing and timelessly sartorial aesthetic. Burberry's craftsmanship is second to none and, in our view, this is a garment that is well worth its high value and exhibits Christopher Bailey's design vision at its very best.
