Ann Demeulemeester is renown for offering beautiful fabrics that are exclusive to her collections, and her knitwear is often realised in very special and unique materials that live up to her venerable reputation. The 'Aura' sweater is one of her signature basic pieces, and is released every season in various fabrics and lengths. The particular version for sale is from S/S 2009, the first season this design was showcased, and its fabric is much more luxurious than the cashmere/viscose blend currently used. Its relaxed oversized design is complemented by a sheer fabric that subtly reveals the wearer's body or the layers worn underneath.
This sweater has Demeulemeester's typical loose silhouette with a wide crew neck and dropped shoulders. The looseness of the upper body is juxtaposed by a tapered waist and slim long sleeves, which give it a subtle sense of structure. The hems have raw edges with an ornate curved shape that resembles the round hems of tailored shirts. The yarn is a finely woven cotton with a dry, organic texture. Despite being 100% cotton, it has a very uncommon organza-like texture and feels very precious. The fabric has an intricate knit that alternates between herringbone and ribbed patterns, giving it a very detailed surface and a lot of stretch.
Overall, this beautiful piece makes for the perfect not-so-basic everyday top, and demonstrates that Ann Demeulemeester's beautifully nonchalant take on fashion is apparent even in the most basic of her items. With its carefully oversized cut and precious fabrication, it will be a unique addition to any wardrobe.
