S/S 2008 was one of Burberry's most groundbreaking seasons, showcasing Christopher Bailey's unforeseen affinity for technical materials. Inspired by surfing garments and Burberry's venerable heritage as a developer of outerwear materials, the collection presented several iconic pieces and fabrics that have been used in many Prorsum collections ever since. This iconic trench coat was shown on the runway's first look, one of the most memorable outfits in Prorsum's recent history. The version ENDYMA has for sale is a more sober and luxurious alternative to the runway's bright red neoprene version, realised in pure silk with leather trims.
First of all, the cut: Burberry Prorsum trench coats have a much sharper silhouette than their London and Brit counterparts. Unlike the typical loose shape that is meant to accommodate a suit, this coat has a flattering slim cut with defined shoulders, elongated slim sleeves and a contoured waist. The result is a handsome and uncompromisingly modern silhouette. Please note that the sleeves have been shortened in the runway photos. The coat's precise cut is elevated by an exceptionally luxurious fabrication. The exterior is made from pure silk gabardine in a deep black hue with a lustrous appearance. The fabric is exceptionally soft and allows the front to drape wonderfully when open. Furthermore, it is completely waterproof like traditional trench fabrics. The classic elegance of the silk fabric is complemented by leather detailing on the belt and cuff straps. The lambskin leather has been washed then polished for a vintage finish with beautifully pronounced grains.
Like all Prorsum outerwear, the quality of this piece is high and demonstrates that no compromise has been made in its construction or design. The front has a ten button closure with a double storm flap detail on the raglan shoulders, while the waist features two curvilinear buttoned pockets. The buttons are made from cast metal in a polished black finish that complements the luxurious aesthetic of the coat. They feel very substantial and are engraved with the Burberry logo. Likewise, the leather buckles of the belt and cuff straps are handmade and finely edged like all traditionally made leather goods. The back has a beautiful multi-panelled construction that closely follows the lines of the body, while the long single vent can be secured with three buttons. The interior has two chest pockets (one zipped) and is fully lined in luxurious jacquard sateen with an oversized Equestrian Knight pattern. All edges of the lining are adorned with silk piping. The neck features a chunky hanging loop, realised in the collection's signature gold braiding.
Overall, this is a unique one-off showpiece that combines an iconic Burberry design with luxurious fabrics and Christopher Bailey's effortless sartorialism. Its beautiful cut and directional leather trims completely set it apart from ordinary trench coats, and we are certain that it will become one of your favourite spring outerwear pieces.
