The S/S 2007 collection was inspired by Arthur Rimbaud's life and travels. It represented Ann Demeulemeester's gently disheveled and layered aesthetic at its most impactful. In her own words, the clothes were 'sophisticated, but in my way.' Lightweight embroidered tunics were worn under waistcoats and short jackets to produce a phantasmagoria of textures, colours and shapes. The dramatic silhouettes of the upper body was balanced by the use of classic tailored trousers, giving a level of formal elegance to an otherwise visually extreme presentation. These beautiful jacquard trousers were one of the collection's key pieces and were worn in numerous runway looks.
Demeulemeester is renown for offering beautiful fabrics that are exclusive to her collections, and the trousers are made from a unique cotton jacquard fabric. From a distance its pattern looks like a simple chalk stripe, however a closer inspection reveals an intricate sequence of black-on-black, black-on-white and white-on-black motifs realised in different weave patterns. While looking rather elegant, the fabric's robust structure makes it hard wearing and most appropriate for an everyday pair of trousers. The cut of the trousers is Demeulemeester's classic shape; an easy and forgiving fitted cut with a tapered leg that looks flattering on a variety of frames, while maintaining a sharp silhouette.
The detailing of the trousers is minimal and streamlined, however Demeulemeester's typical attention to detail is evident. The front has a flat construction with quarter pockets on the sides, and closes with six chunky buttons. The waist has an artfully constructed Victorian style 'fishtail' back. The back is finished with welt pockets with curvilinear buttoned flaps. On the interior, the waistband is lined in black cotton and the hems feature grosgrain tape applications to protect them from wear.
Overall, this is a versatile pair of trousers with an elegant yet casual style that will add thoughtful interest to any sophisticated outfit. Their unique fabric and well-thought-out cut set them apart from ordinary trousers and demonstrate Demeulemeester's skills as a tailor and designer.
