Vogue.co.uk's review of the S/S 2006 collection outlines:
"I wanted to go back to feel the essence of Burberry, that sense of aristocracy and the military," said Christopher Bailey of his spring/summer 2006 menswear collection. And, opening with a trench, he couldn't fail to bring the strengths of Burberry's past to the forefront of our minds. There was a modern, preppy mood with checked ties and pale scarves worn with matching suits that kept things modern and very much alive.
Although the runway show's traditionalist styling resulted in a largely forgettable presentation, a closer inspection of the individual pieces indicates that a new level of sophistication had been achieved for Prorsum menswear. The tailoring was sharp as ever, while the development of custom hardware and trims brought a new level of luxury to the house. This precisely constructed shirt exhibits Bailey's consistent focus on silhouette, while military-inspired elements lend it a subtly aggressive edge.
The shirt has a skinny cut with narrow shoulders, fitted sleeves and a fantastically tailored torso block that closely follows the contours of the body to create a flattering and razor-sharp cut. The panelled front is finished with a strong small collar and a concealed button closure, while the back has long darts. Chunky epaulettes add definition to the shoulders, further contributing to the sharp silhouette. The piece is crafted from a fine cotton in a beautiful midnight blue colour. The fabric's distinctive herringbone twill pattern is one of the S/S 2006 collection's hallmark details.
Like all Burberry Prorsum shirting, the shirt's finishing leaves nothing to be desired. The intricate pattern of the herringbone twill fabric is matched flawlessly throughout the design. The buttons are made from genuine mother of pearl in a tonal blue hue and are engraved with the Burberry logo. The epaulettes are decorated with the season's distinctive antique metal buttons, creating subtle contrast. The cuffs have a sharp rectangular shape and feature elongated openings (a Christopher Bailey signature). All seams have flat fell finishing on the interior that protects them from undesirable fraying.
Military shirts have become synonymous with the Burberry brand, in their unique combination of militaristic masculinity and dandy elegance. With a beautifully proportioned cut and interesting details, this piece will make the difference in any well-considered outift.
