Raf Simons T-shirt from A/W 2005-2006 'History of My World'. In excellent used condition. Made in Belgium.
A/W 2005 was one of Raf Simons's classic seasons, focusing on reworked military shapes that gave a dramatic dimension to the designer's razor-sharp tailoring. Besides looking comprehensively stellar, 'History of my World' was a turning point for the Raf Simons aesthetic; it marked the transition from layered, subculture-inspired streetwear (clothes for boys) to an impeccably tailored modernist vision (clothes for men). Tim Blanks writes:
'Simons expanded on his poignant, futuristic vocabulary, which embraces a radical new shape. [...] A lot of the clothes had military or uniform connotations [that] rang a little sinister. But, like the shoulder and elbow pads on his Jacquard knits, they were surely just reflecting the essentially combative nature of Simons' designs. If you're not thinking about these clothes, they're not working.' (our emphasis)
This T-shirt is crafted from a finely knit cotton jersey in a military green hue. The fabric has a high thread count that makes it smooth and pleasant against the skin, without being excessively stretchy. Like most Raf Simons basics from this period, the cut is sharp and narrow with a form-fitting body, skinny elongated sleeves and a tight shoulderline. The neck has a V-shape and is finished with ribbed trim.
The piece is adorned with the season's signature 'Poltergeist' print. The text is horizontally separated into two fragments, the upper of which is placed on the chest and the lower on the upper back. Although most of the collection's streetwear garments (parkas, sweatshirts, T-shirts) were not featured in the runway presentation, they were some of the season's strongest offerings. Many pieces were decorated with prints and patches that alluded to the classic supernatural horror thriller film Poltergeist directed by Tobe Hooper and co-written and produced by Steven Spielberg. These references ranged from film quotes to vague statements and graphics about death, darkness and the ethereal.
This is a classic Raf basic from one of his best collections, featuring the designer's timelessly precise silhouette and an enigmatic yet stylishly-executed print. While being more subtle than his typical graphics, it is definitely one of our favourites.
