Helmut Lang asymmetric denim jacket from S/S 2004. Made in Italy.
S/S 2004 is one of Helmut Lang's most famous seasons and many of its captivating designs are now part of modern fashion history. Lang's typical sharp silhouettes were intensified by abstracted shapes, elastic straps, cut-outs and unexpected splashes of reflective materials. While many of the collection's denim designs were not shown on the runway, their sophistication certainly makes them worth the attention of Helmut Lang collectors.
Taking the classic Helmut Lang denim jacket to a new level of sophistication, this exceptionally rare jacket is a true showpiece and certainly one of the most exciting finds in our latest range of denim garments. Exclusive to S/S 2004, the design combines the utilitarian elements of Lang's mid-90's workwear with the sophisticated abstraction of his later collections. The front consists of a single-piece torso block with chest pockets, both of which have been reversed (sewn on the interior) with strong rectangular stitching. Most interestingly, the left sleeve is finished with an asymmetric shoulder panel that creates a beautiful militaristic point of interest. A concealed button closure further complements the streamlined aesthetic, while the cuffs are finished with simple slits.
The piece is crafted from Lang's signature overdyed denim, a heavy fabric that has been piece-dyed for a deep and saturated colour finish with a vintage texture. The silhouette is narrow, with a straight body and elongated sleeves. The construction is exceptionally precise, with flat-fell seams that protect the interior from undesirable fraying while essentially making the jacket reversible. The back is constructed with a beautiful vertical seam, while the logo-engraved hardware has a vintage black finish that complements the dark colours of the piece.
A quintessential Helmut Lang design, this jacket is a beautiful example of Lang's transformation of classic designs to create highly sophisticated garments. Besides being one of the rarest denim-style jackets he has designed, it is also a versatile design that will make for an ideal spring/summer piece. Strongly recommended.
* Concerning the two different versions that are currently available, IT 42 is the original sample garment that was displayed in Helmut Lang's NY showroom, while IT 40 is the standard version that was available by retailers. The differences between the two are limited to their interior labels; the former only has the main Helmut Lang label, while the retail version has an additional one specifying the jacket's fabric and cut. The fabric content labels are also different, in line with Prada group labels from this period. Beyond these minor variations, the construction and detailing on both pieces is identical.
