A/W 2003 saw many reissues of classic Helmut Lang outerwear from the late 1990s, including the signature biker jacket from 1999. Inspired by astronaut uniforms, motorcycle safety gear and rave subcultures, the A/W 1999 collection is seen as one of Lang's best. Its subversively elegant and uncompromisingly modern universe has since then inspired a long list of designers. This jacket was undoubtedly the key piece of the collection, worn by both men and women in many runway looks and appearing prominently in the advertising campaign. Iconic details such as the distinctive biker-inspired construction and high funnel neck act as an ample demonstration of Lang's timeless appeal.
Although this piece is from the women's line, its style and sizing make it undeniably unisex. The cut is slim and defined, with narrow shoulders and articulated sleeves that follow the lines of the body for increased mobility. The fabric is a soft yet hard-wearing cotton drill that will age wonderfully over time. The front closes with four large buttons and a zipper. The funnel neck features drawstrings, a long velcro strap and a hidden metal wire to adjust its shape while a removable faux fur insert creates graphic contrast with the deep black body. The sleeves are finished with biker detailing and heavy zippers on the cuffs.
Upon a closer inspection it becomes evident that the piece is constructed to a high standard. The interior is fully padded and lined in a smooth cupro/viscose sateen, making the jacket very warm and a pleasure to wear. The three-dimensional construction of the shell is precisely replicated on the lining, allowing for increased movement without excessive fabric. All zippers are Riri M6 and have a gunmetal finish that subtly complements the modern aesthetic of the piece. The waist features four pockets, two of which are zipped. The interior is finished with Lang's signature square patch pocket and a vertical buttoned welt pocket.
From one of Helmut Lang's most groundbreaking 1990s collections, this statement jacket impresses despite the fact that it was designed over 15 years ago. The influence of Lang's designs can be seen everywhere nowadays, and this is a very rare opportunity to acquire the original article in unused condition. We strongly recommend it.
