Helmut Lang lace-up western jeans from A/W 2002-2003. In brand new condition with tags. Made in Italy.
The A/W 2002 collection epitomises the high sophistication of Lang's 'luxury' period in the early 2000's, and I consider it one of his very best seasons. The sobriety of evening wear and classic tailored shapes was subverted by the use of deconstructed cut-outs and intricately layered jersey skeletons, while lustrous patent leather and exotic skins such as perch and stingray lent unconventional textures to the luxurious designs. Hallmark Helmut Lang materials such as heavy moleskin cotton, raw denim and rubber elastic tape highlighted the collection's self-referential character, which drew elements from Lang's classic collections from the 1990s. The overall result was an eclectic celebration that brought together disparate influences to create a sophisticated and thoroughly avant-garde wardrobe.
A season exclusive, these spectacular jeans demonstrate Lang's affinity for Western classics at its most inventive. Americana has been a persistent source of inspiration for the designer since his brand's outset, and he appropriated its visual culture in quirky and unexpected ways. The intricately laced detailing on the front references cowboy chaps, while the slightly tapered vertical seams along the legs are undoubtedly Western-inspired. The jeans' impressive silhouette further reinforces the aesthetic: The cut is an exaggerated adaptation of Lang's 'Low Waist Boot Cut' shape and consists of a low rise, fitted seat and a slim leg that flares dramatically towards the hem.
The jeans are sturdy, hard-wearing and constructed to a very high standard. The fabric is heavyweight denim that has been overdyed black to achieve a deep colour. Over time, the fabric's edges will fade into a striking dark grey. Tonal black hardware engraved with the Helmut Lang logo adds a polished touch, while the interior is neatly finished with flat fell and bound seams that ensure the piece will be worn for years without fraying.
Exemplifying Helmut Lang Jeans' cutting-edge aesthetic, these idiosyncratic jeans will add a striking point of interest to any sophisticated casual look. Furthermore, they were only available as part of the A/W 2002 collection and finding them in unused condition is unlikely to happen again soon.
