For S/S 2000, Raf Simons sought inspiration in two contrasting depictions of youth. On the one hand were the members of MENSA, an international high IQ society: Their influence was seen in sweater-and-shirt looks, inoffensive colours and 'nerdy' athletic blousons. On the other hand there was Gabba, a subgenre of hardcore techno popular in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. Simons paid a nonchalant tribute to ravers through the collection's distinctive oversized military outerwear, sleeveless tops and baggy trousers. The result was a hybrid look that combined subculture-inspired streetwear with the aesthetic austerity often found in academia.
This sweater was one of the collection's most distinctive pieces, styled like a uniform in numerous runway looks. Its directional asymmetric pattern features geometrical shapes in royal blue, heather grey, beige and dark navy.
Like most Raf simons tops from the designer's early years, the sweater has an extremely narrow cut with slim elongated sleeves that reach the palms. The knit is 100% merino wool, a high quality yarn with that is soft yet firm and hard-wearing. Despite the sweater's age, it features no pilling whatsoever and its soft texture makes it pleasant to wear. The neck has a crew shape with a wide neckline, while the cuffs and hem are ribbed. The back is realised in grey, with the exception of the left sleeve. The contrasting pieces are knit together flawlessly for a precise finish that complements the modernist design. Subtle changes in knitting technique appear around the neck and sleeves, demonstrating the designer's characteristic attention to detail. Overall, this piece is finished to a very luxurious standard.
