Helmut Lang biker parka from S/S 2000. In excellent used condition with minor signs of wear. Made in Italy.
Although the simple silhouettes of the S/S 2000 runway presentation were characterised by airiness and fluidity through the use of translucent silks and textured fabrics, the Helmut Lang Jeans line developed the cutting-edge streetwear aesthetic of the much-coveted A/W 1999 collection. Although the range's vast majority was not shown on the runway, its offerings are definitely worth the attention of Helmut Lang collectors. 1999's now-iconic biker pieces were reinterpreted in lighter technical fabrics, along with the introduction of new details such as the distinctive neck rest collar (inspired by the shape of travel pillows), large cargo pockets and cut-out button plackets.
This spectacular coat exhibits many of the aforementioned details, and can be understood as an updated take on Lang's classic biker coat. The front has a concealed button closure that leads up to a removable neck rest collar with a translucent nylon hood. The hood can be zipped into the collar, which in turn can be detached to give its place to a cleaner stand-up collar. Thee dimensional cargo pockets on the sides of the torso add abstract detail, while the articulated sleeves are finished with darts on the elbows and cuff zippers. The visionary design is taken to the next level by its compound fabrication, consisting of cotton/stainless steel canvas bonded to white polyurethane film. This laminate process produces a strong and rigid material that is extremely hard-wearing, windproof and waterproof, while the interwoven metal threads create a wrinkled effect. The cut is slim, with narrow shoulders and a slightly oversized body.
An abundance of thoughtful details complete the piece: The collar is finished with lightweight padding that reinforces its curvilinear shape, while the front cargo pockets can be accessed through small zippers placed along the side seams. The unlined interior is beautifully finished with bound seams and a buttoned pocket. A grosgrain tape application lends visual definition to the waistline thanks to its pronounced horizontal stitiching.
Overall, this piece is a wonderful example of Lang's futuristic sportswear, where cutting-edge materials meet abstract details and subtle references to subcultural styles. Considerably harder to find than its 1999 counterparts and constructed to a very high standard, it will become a key piece in any forward-thinking collection.
