A/W 1999-2000 is seen by many as one of Helmut Lang's most groundbreaking seasons, whose directional pieces are just as relevant today as when they were designed. Inspired by astronaut uniforms, motorcycle safety gear and rave subcultures, Lang created a subversively elegant and uncompromisingly modern universe that has since then inspired a long list of designers. Being the collection's signature pieces, biker-inspired garments were worn by both men and women in many runway looks. This substantial winter parka exhibits many of the season's distinctive details, while its interior is finished with Lang's iconic bondage straps.
The parka has a semi-fitted cut, with narrow shoulders and an oversized straight body. The sleeves have an engineered construction that follows the shape of the arms, creating an aggressive silhouette while allowing for easy movement. The front closes with a concealed zipper and buttons, leading to an aggressive funnel neck with a large velcro strap. Biker-inspired stitching decorates the elbows, while the cuffs are finished with zippers. The interior features adjustable grosgrain cotton straps that can be used to carry the coat like a backpack. The parka is realised in Lang's signature black overdyed cotton flat weave with a resin coating that gives it a textured surface and a matte appearance.
The construction of the piece is wonderfully detailed: Wire reinforcement on the neckline can be used to significantly alter its shape, while velcro pieces secure the collar when worn down. A large concealed pocket is discreetly placed along the upper part of the front placket. Being fully padded on the body and sleeves, the interior is comfortable and exceptionally warm. Polished silver metal hardware offers a sharp contrast to the deep black fabric, while complementing the directional design. A square patch pocket is found on the interior, and the charcoal taffeta lining features vertical quilting. Overall, all seams are immaculately executed inside and out.
This rare parka perfectly encapsulates the aggressive urban aesthetic of Lang's seminal A/W 1999-2000 collection. Its winter proof construction, hard-wearing materials and directional aesthetic are a testament to the Austrian designer's timeless appeal, while resulting in the perfect go-to outerwear piece.
