A/W 1999-2000 is seen by many as one of Helmut Lang's most groundbreaking seasons, whose directional pieces are just as relevant today as when they were designed. Inspired by astronaut uniforms, motorcycle safety gear and rave subcultures, Lang created a subversively elegant and uncompromisingly modern universe that has since then inspired a long list of designers. Being the collection's signature pieces, biker-inspired garments were worn by both men and women in many runway looks. This substantial winter coat exhibits many of the season's signature details, while its interior is finished with Lang's iconic bondage straps that can be attached like a harness to the wearer's body.
The parka has an oversized, unstructured silhouette; the shoulders are fairly defined, however the body is cut wide and straight for a dramatic shape with plenty of room for layering. An abundance of distinctive features demonstrate Helmut Lang's timeless appeal: The front closes with a concealed metal zipper and buttons. The sleeves have an articulated construction that closely follows the lines of the body while allowing for easy movement. Biker-inspired top stitching adorns the elbows and the cuffs are finished with zippers. Furthermore, three adjustable grosgrain cotton straps can be used to carry the jacket and two large straps on the hem can be attached to the legs.
The parka is realised in Helmut Lang's signature deep black overdyed cotton with a resin coating that gives it a textured surface and a matte appearance. The interior is fully padded on the body and sleeves, making it exceptionally warm. The construction is excellent as to be expected. Polished silver hardware offers a sharp contrast to the deep black fabric, while complementing the directional design. The stand-up collar has military-inspired triangular stitching. A square patch pocket is found on the interior, and the charcoal taffeta lining features vertical quilting. Overall, all seams are immaculately executed inside and out.
Overall, this rare parka perfectly encapsulates the aggressive urban aesthetic of Lang's seminal A/W 1999-2000 collection. Its winter proof construction, hard-wearing materials and directional aesthetic will make this a cherished wardrobe staple for years to come.
