1999 Cargo Vest Pack with Crossover Back Straps
46 cm x 33 cm x 15 cm. This bag has a capacity of approximately 7,5 litres.
Helmut Lang military cargo vest from S/S 1999. In excellent used condition with minor signs of wear. Made in Japan.
Helmut Lang held several license agreements for the production and distribution of Lang's designs from 1988 until the label's demise. One of the most interesting was the partnership with Onward Kashiyama* to create a range of bags and travel accessories exclusively for the Japanese market. Entirely manufactured in Japan to an exceptionally high standard, the collection was largely inspired by military surplus gear and clubbing accessories and realised in hard-wearing materials such as ballistic nylon and heavy coated leather. This piece is from A/W 1999-2000, one of Helmut Lang's most groundbreaking seasons inspired by astronaut uniforms, motorcycle safety gear and rave subcultures. The collection's subversively elegant and uncompromisingly modern universe has since then inspired a long list of designers.
This unique vest pack channels the 1999 collection's avant-garde aesthetic through its aggressive technical design. Created to be worn as a vest or a backpack, it features a large storage compartment along with two cargo pockets on the lower front. The piece secures to the body with two large straps that can be placed straight or diagonally to create an eye-catching X shape when closed. A subtle Helmut Lang logo decorates the right cargo pocket, while the zippers are finished with chunky branded pull tabs. The fabric is densely woven bonded nylon with a lustrous finish that lends a subtle elegance to the directional piece.
Combining utility with Helmut Lang's luxurious finishing, the vest is constructed to a very high standard. The back features thick padding for comfortable carrying, and is reinforced with intricate linear stitching. The straps close with heavy duty velcro that allows them to be adjusted and repositioned. The interior is fully lined and finished with an extended flap that protects its contents from the elements. Furthermore, there is a zipped pocket and a polished metal plaque that has been precisely engraved with the Helmut Lang logo. All interior seams are bound with thick grosgrain tape for increased durability, while the hardware has a gunmetal finish that complements the dark design.
An iconic and exceptionally rare piece from one of Lang's best seasons, this vest pack will make serious impact without compromising on function.
*Onwards's ties with Helmut Lang date back to late 1994, when their Italian subsidiary GIBO' Co. S.p.A became responsible for the manufacture of Helmut Lang's mainline and Onward Kashiyama USA acting as the distributor of Lang's brand in the US.
