1998 Extended Sleeve Shirt
Size 46: Best for an IT 46 - 36 Chest - S or an IT 44 - 34 Chest - XS.
Raf Simons shirt with elongated sleeves from A/W 1998-1999 'Radioactivity'. In very good used condition with minor discolourations. Made in Belgium.
First shown for the S/S 98 'Black Palms' collection, this shirt is one of Simons's most directional formal designs and has been reissued several times throughout his career (pictured: A/W 13, A/W 05). Like most of the Belgian designer's tailoring, it combines traditional sartorialism with unique elements that set it completely apart from classic shirts. For this piece, the narrow sleeves have been drastically/radically elongated and finished without cuffs to create a dramatic look reminiscent of straitjackets. The sleeves can be stacked, turned up or left to extend below the palms for a unique look that lends itself particularly well to layered outfits. The cut is skinny with narrow shoulders, high armholes and slightly contoured side seams. The original version of this design from S/S 1998 is available here in black.
Like all Raf Simons shirting, the shirt is constructed to a high standard with considerable attention to detail. In this instance, proportion is key: The collar is chunky and structured, complementing the precise silhouette, while the hem is straight, giving the shirt a sharp look when worn untucked. The back is constructed with a narrow yoke whose abbreviated shape further reinforces the design's dynamism. Likewise, the sleeves are finished without cuffs. The buttons are crafted from genuine mother-of-pearl and Simons's iconic 'R' logo decorates the lower torso. The fabric is medium-weight cotton poplin with a firm drape and a streamlined matte surface. Finally, the interior is finished with French seams that protect the fabric from fraying.
Overall, this is a rare and iconic shirt that represents Simons's experimentation with traditional menswear at their most impactful. Its razor-sharp silhouette and unique proportions will add a subversive element to any semi-formal or casual outfit.
