Helmut Lang's S/S 1997 collection was a tremendous success that further solidified his status as the quiet avant-garde spirit of his generation. Focusing on the refinement of his personal vision rather than seasonal novelty, Lang showed his characteristic mix of clubwear-inspired separates, sharp suiting and sophisticated eveningwear. Subtle decorative applications brought forth an element of unforeseen abstraction: Solid rubber stripes and satin sashes in bold colours evoked graphic modernity; deconstructed elements and abbreviated shapes were wrapped around the models' bodies, confusing and enticing the viewer; nylon trims gave a sport-inspired urgency to sober fitted lines. Lang's characteristic jersey dresses were restricted by straps, while silk trims in unexpected places redefined conventional luxury.
Beautifully crafted and aesthetically trailblazing, this hard-to-find cardigan is a strong example of Helmut Lang's highly influential work during the mid-1990s. The cut is slim and form-fitting, with narrow elongated sleeves that gently stack on the cuffs - reminiscent of the work of designers like Rick Owens from a decade later. The cardigan is crafted from a compact viscose knit with a matte colour finish and a softly crisp texture. This interesting material gives a very substantial feel to the piece while still being comfortable and pleasant to wear. The season's signature contrast nylon grosgrain trim decorates the waistline, creating a minimalist yet striking detail that is quintessential Lang. Simple black buttons complement the streamlined aesthetic, while the hemline is finished with concealed reinforcing to maintain its sharp horizontal line.
In an interview with Lang for Arena Homme+, Jo-Ann Furniss wrote that Lang's work “was essentially divining and designing the future.” This spectacular piece is proof of this ambitious statement, and will add a healthy dose of subtle sophistication to a variety of formal and casual outfits.
