Ann Demeulemeester 'Wish' reversible sweater from S/S 2005. In excellent used condition. Made in France. RRP: €350 (£285.98)

This luxurious sportswear-inspired top is a good example of Demeulemeester's refined pattern cutting techniques. Originally presented on the S/S 2005 runway, it remains one of her basic staples and has been re-issued numerous times. The top's construction is entirely asymmetrical, resulting in slightly twisted seams that give a soft drape to the silhouette. It can be reversed for two slightly contrasting looks.

The sweater is crafted from two exceptionally smooth cotton jersey fabrics, with a soft texture and slightly threadbare look. The white layer is moderately see-through, resulting in a visually arresting appearance that changes with movement. Like most Demeulemeester designs from this period, the cut is form-fitting and elongated. The white layer's neck has a three-dimensional funnel shape, while the black layer features Demeulemeester's characteristic deconstructed collar with three mother of pearl buttons. Both layers are finished with elongated trims made of soft ribbed knit. The piece's asymmetrical construction is present in even inconspicuous details such as the construction of the hood.

Overall, the complicated construction and beautiful fabrics of this piece distinguish it from most casual tops, and demonstrate that Ann Demeulemeester's nonchalant take on fashion is apparent even in the most basic of her items. Worn on its own or layered under a jacket, it will be a versatile addition to any sophisticated wardrobe.
