2005 Vintage Sanded Broken Denim Military Shorts with Metal Detail

'It’s about America. It’s not about couture', Helmut Lang famously stated after rejecting Balenciaga's proposal to work as the maison's head designer. Lang had an enduring fascination with American workwear and particularly its most iconic identifier, denim. Starting with the introduction of his Jeans label in 1996, Lang designed hundreds of garments that transformed classic denim staples to sophisticated high fashion pieces. In turn, fashion critics have acknowledged that his work was catalytic in the rise of designer denim as we know it.

Another unconventional find from our archive, this piece is one of the very few examples of Helmut Lang shorts. Part of the S/S 2005 collection, the shorts have an abundance of militaristic details that have come to define Lang's final seasons. The collection's signature curvilinear patch pockets decorate the front, securing with chunky snap buttons. Similarly, the back features trapezium-shaped pockets and is finished with adjustable waist tabs. A large metal hoop hanging from a bullet holder tab completes the design; a direct reference to Lang's first Helmut Lang Jeans collection from 1996 (pictured). 

The shorts are crafted from medium weight denim that has undergone an intense process of sanding, washing and distressing to achieve a vintage look. The addition of 2% elastane gives the fabric some stretch for increased comfort. The hardware has an antique silver finish and is engraved with the Helmut Lang logo, while the interior is flawlessly finished with mainly flat fell seams that ensure the jeans will be worn for years without fraying.

Overall, these shorts are easy to wear and perfect for the warmer seasons. At the same time, Lang's distinctive detailing adds an unexpected element that will certainly set them apart from similar garments.
