2003 Soft Fleece Slashed Front Coat with Cuff Straps
IT 40: Best for a Women's UK 8/US 6 or a slim UK 10/US 8.
Helmut Lang deconstructed bondage coat from A/W 2003-2004. In excellent used condition. Made in Italy.
A/W 2003 is seen by many as Helmut Lang's definitive 'bondage' collection. A diverse variety of inspirations -ranging from airforce uniforms and Vivienne Westwood's Seditionaries to classic evening tailoring- were refined into a unique collection that combined subcultural aggression with refined sartorialism. The season's conceptually rich designs have become part of contemporary fashion history, influencing a wide range of designers in the process. This distinctive coat was one of the collection's most prominent pieces, and its variations can be seen in several runway looks besides editorials and advertisements. Its design is loosely based on Lang's classic Chesterfield coat, however many of the original features have been transformed to create an unconventional showpiece.
The front has a double breasted button closure that has been concealed and deconstructed to form rectangular panels interrupted by horizontal slashes. The unique construction produces a beautiful cascading effect when the front is open, or maintains a more restrained look when closed. The piece is crafted from a thick polar fleece with a soft, fluffy texture reminiscent of cashmere wool. The material's gently unstructured drape gives a softer edge to the sharp silhouette, with narrow shoulders, slim elongated sleeves and a form-fitting body.
Interesting details such as the tube-like stand-up collar and cuff slits add further layers of complexity to the idiosyncratic piece. Lang' signature bondage cuff straps crafted from removable elastic tape add a sinister edge to the design. The waist features two pockets that are placed discreetly along the side seams, while the back is finished with a single buttoned vent. The interior is finished to a high standard with an exceptionally smooth viscose/PBT lining that is mainly attached by hand. All buttons are made from tonal resin in line with the piece's dark aesthetic.
A hallmark piece from Helmut Lang's final years, this beautiful outerwear piece combines the Autumn/Winter 2003 collection's much-coveted aesthetic with a versatile and easy-to-wear construction. We believe it will become one of your wardrobe's most cherished garments.
