Raf Simons denim jacket from A/W 2005-2006 'History of My World'. In excellent used condition. Made in Belgium.

A/W 2005 was one of Raf Simons's classic seasons, focusing on reworked military shapes that gave a dramatic dimension to the designer's razor-sharp tailoring.  Besides looking comprehensively stellar, 'History of my World' was a turning point for the Raf Simons aesthetic; it marked the transition from layered, subculture-inspired streetwear (clothes for boys) to an impeccably tailored modernist vision (clothes for men). Tim Blanks writes:

'Simons expanded on his poignant, futuristic vocabulary, which embraces a radical new shape. The presentation [...] made its point with a baggy-trousered, cropped-jacket silhouette that focused attention on a loose, gathered waistlineA lot of the clothes had military or uniform connotations [that] rang a little sinister. But, like the shoulder and elbow pads on his Jacquard knits, they were surely just reflecting the essentially combative nature of Simons' designs. If you're not thinking about these clothes, they're not working.' (our emphasis)

A very rare example of a Raf Simons denim jacket, this piece appeared on the S/S 2005 'History of the World' runway (pictured). The A/W 2005 version is even more uncommon, and features a leather patch on the neck that monumentally declares 'HIST. OT W.' and 'DENIM', accompanied by a Raf Simons logo. Further reference numbers and abbreviations lend an obscure character to the piece, possibly alluding to lab equipment and industrial design samples. Similar phrases can be observed in other pieces from Simons's 'History' collections such as this bracelet.

The jacket's design is mainly derived from 1980's trucker jackets, as seen in its lack of vertical panels, slanted waist pockets and militaristic topstitching around the button placket. While the aesthetic is somewhat retro, Simons's skinny and structured silhouette ensures its contemporary relevance. Please note that the piece was styled oversized in the runway presentation. The jacket is crafted from dark grey denim with an acid wash treatment that gives it a vintage finish with pronounced variations in colour.

The construction of this piece is of an exceptional standard and undoubtedly superior to the majority of denim jackets. All seams, including the armhole, have a precise flat-fell finish protecting the interior from undesirable fraying while making the jacket completely reversible. The hardware has a gunmetal finish with a beautiful laurel wreath engraving, similar to the antique hardware seen on WWII worker garments. The interior has a single pocket and the waist is finished with adjustable tabs.

A combination of heritage workwear with Simons's avant-garde sensibilities, this thoughtfully designed piece is a timeless classic. Its precise silhouette and exceptional finishing will make it one of your favourite casual pieces.
