Raf Simons sports sweater from A/W 1998-1999 'Radioactivity'. In excellent used condition, except for extensive wear on the cuffs. Made in Belgium.

Raf Simons sweatshirts from his first decade have generally been associated with oversized silhouettes, however this early example offers a glimpse into another aspect of the designer's visionary output. As we have often argued about his tailoring, Simons was one of the pioneers of slim-fitting clothing for men, and his work came to represent a new direction for menswear. This classic raglan sweater was first introduced in 1996, and its simple yet precisely thought-out design represents Simons's highly influential silhouette which has often been imitated in the years that followed.

This all-black version from A/W 1998 'Radioactivity' combines effortless sportswear details with interesting touches that give it subtle points of interest. The silhouette is trim with a fitted straight body and narrow sleeves. The piece has a crew neck, raglan shoulders and ribbed trims around the neckline, cuffs and hem. Although the design is rather simple, a closer inspection reveals that the pattern of this piece is almost entirely asymmetric, with slightly twisted seams on the body and sleeves. Besides creating an interesting detail, this detail enhances the drape of the torso for a cleaner look.

The ribbing of the cuffs has frayed extensively over time resulting in a dishevelled finish. Interestingly, this deterioration has been observed in other sweatshirts from this period, thereby raising questions about whether this was an intentional feature. The fabric is high quality loopback jersey that is certainly suggestive of Simons's enduring fascination with classic American sportswear. It has a soft texture and a deep black colour.

A rare and timeless example of Raf's visionary aesthetic, this sweater is a true wardrobe essential. While being rich in history, it is a well-cut and well-constructed basic that will complement any casual outfit.
