Helmut Lang vintage denim jacket from A/W 1998-1999. In excellent used condition with minor signs of wear. Made in Italy.

We have often argued that Helmut Lang's work was catalytic in the transformation of classic denim staples to sophisticated high fashion pieces. An examination of Lang's output reveals that American denim jackets were a strong source of inspiration for the Austrian designer, who in turn created countless garments influenced by their iconic detailing and proportions.

Drawing inspiration from mid-century jackets such as Levi's 507XX and Wrangler's 11MJ, this unusual lower 2-pocket version was first presented for A/W 1997 and was released in most 1990's collections that followed. Like the classic workwear designs it is based on, the jacket features two patch pockets with flaps positioned slightly lower on the torso. The similarities, however, end there: Lang's minimalist approach is apparent in the jacket's unembelished design. Yoke panels add shape to the upper body while the main part of the back is constructed from a single piece of fabric. The pronounced fades of the once-raw blue denim fabric -created through years of wear with minimal washing- lend an authentic character to the piece. This is particularly noticeable on the sleeves. Also available in grey denim.

The jacket's silhouette is classic and modern: slightly dropped shoulders and a straight body add casual nonchalance, while narrow sleeves and high armholes maintain a sharp silhouette. Its construction is exemplary like all Helmut Lang denim garments. Precise flat-fell seams protect the interior from undesirable fraying while making the jacket completely reversible. The hardware has a matte silver finish and is engraved with the Helmut Lang logo. Upon a closer inspection, we can see that selected details such as the buttonholes are sewn with black instead of orange thread, demonstrating the designer's attention to detail.

Combining 1990's minimalism with classic American workwear, this rare jacket is a handsome demonstration of the Austrian designer's sophisticated take on classic denim icons. In addition to its interesting details, the jacket has aged wonderfully over time to achieve beautiful fades that can only be achieved through years of wear.
