Burberry Prorsum's A/W 2011-2012 collection had no distinct theme. Instead, Christopher Bailey sought to explore the garments most representative of Burberry's outdoors heritage: Military outerwear. Bailey stated: 'As a nation, we have this obsession with the weather, and I wanted to explore that, and to celebrate the coat.' With Burberry's heritage-driven visual language as the starting point, Bailey completely reinvented classic styles by experimenting with proportions and fabrics. In our view, this resulted in some of his most interesting creations for men. Tim Blanks writes:
'[Bailey] decided on a coat for all seasons as his theme for Fall 2011, and that's exactly what he offered. [...] The Main Event was The Coat in weights that were variously suitable for rain or wind or snow. Here's testament to focus—just as with Bailey's aviator jacket collection last Fall, almost every single coat was an object of lust.'
Like other pieces from this collection, the classic single-breasted design is given an avant-garde edge through the use of futuristic materials and slightly exaggerated proportions. The fitted cut has very narrow set-in shoulders and high armholes, while the sleeve caps have a rounded raglan-like shape. The engineered shape of the sleeves allows for an exceptionally close-fitting silhouette without compromising on comfort. On the back, architectural darts complement the contours of the body. Elaborate curvilinear topstitching (entirely seam-sealed) defines the back waist while Prorsum's signature antique metal belt hooks add luxurious detail. A short rain shield and a beautiful layered vent complete the sophisticated design.
This intriguing masculine silhouette is further complemented by the strong double-faced cotton, with a sand-coloured exterior bonded to contrasting brown fabric. Merging tradition with technology, the interior is entirely seam-sealed using tonal tape. Commonly found in technical athletic outerwear, this feature allows for effective protection against the elements. A series of exquisite details set this piece apart from classic trench coats while demonstrating Burberry Prorsum's opulent finishing: The neck has a small stand-up collar with a removable throat latch and features angular military stitching. The waist has two intricately constructed pockets that are large enough to carry a tablet. The buttons are made from matte resin and are engraved with the Burberry Prorsum logo. The belt is finished with a handcrafted leather buckle and metal eyelets. The underarms feature similar eyelets for ventilation. The unlined interior has two buttoned pockets and Prorsum's signature hanging loop chain is found on the neck.
Technically innovative yet bold and refined, this iconic trench coat will make for a timeless and luxurious wardrobe staple.
