For Burberry Prorsum's A/W 2004 menswear collection Christopher Bailey drew inspiration from mid-century collegiate styles, Victorian dandies and traditional British hunting outerwear. In our view the presentation was rather banal and therefore failed to showcase Bailey's modern and often enticing takes on formally conservative forms. However, what is most interesting is that his vision for men's tailoring was already fully fledged, with the most memorable demonstration being a series of beautiful wool coats. This extremely rare piece demonstrates Bailey's timelessly modern approach, and looks just as iconic as when first showcased in 2003.
A sharper and more elegant interpretation of World War I great coats, the piece has a double-breasted design with curvilinear panels on the upper body (a seasonal signature) and oversized notch lapels. The cut is sharp and flattering; the narrow shoulderline has a beautiful pagoda shape, which is further complemented by pronounced roping on the sleeve caps. The body is expertly canvassed for a strong sculptured silhouette, while the belt can be used to give it a more contoured shape. The fabric is an exceptional quality wool cashmere felt; while its composition of 90% virgin wool and 10% cashmere is nothing unusual, its luxurious soft drape, robust body and smooth texture set it apart from similar fabrics.
The fabrication, finishing and overall drape of this piece are fantastic, and proudly exhibit the level of traditional craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail that were employed in its manufacture. Oversized woven leather buttons add a touch of heritage-inspired opulence, while pleasantly contrasting with the fabric's beautiful moss green colour. Two flawlessly constructed patch pockets decorate the front, while the cuffs are finished with ornate turn ups. The heavy luggage stitching details on the chest, yoke and sleeves create sharp lines that indicate the precision in the coat's construction. The interior is fully lined in a tonal viscose sateen on the body and a supersoft cupro/viscose blend on the sleeves. Several interior elements -such as the shoulder lining- are attached by hand.
We have inspected, worn and sold Burberry Prorsum outerwear from every collection in the line's short history, and can certainly say this is one of the best pieces we have seen. Its construction and materials are clearly superior when compared to Prorsum's more recent tailoring, and its design is as timeless as it gets. Strongly recommended.
