Burberry Prorsum t-shirt from A/W 2004-2005. Sample in brand new condition without tags. Made in Italy.

Although Christopher Bailey's output at Burberry is largely associated with Prorsum's elaborately constructed military outerwear, an equally sophisticated approach can be found in his basics. Case in point: This T-shirt features an abundance of refined details that set it apart from typical tops, while showcasing Bailey's enticing exploration of British sartorial heritage. For Burberry Prorsum's A/W 2004 menswear collection the designer drew inspiration from mid-century collegiate styles, Victorian dandies and traditional British hunting outerwear.

This T-shirt channels the collection's quintessentially English aesthetic through its ornate yoke panel, which features a distinctive Arts & Crafts pattern. The yoke panel's curvilinear construction is inspired by classic hunting outerwear designs and was one of A/W 2004's signature detailsIts orange and brown colours slightly slightly contrast the top's dark grey melange body, while giving definition to the sharp narrow shoulders.

Considerable attention has been devoted to the finishing of this piece: twisted side seams on the body give the top an effortless drape, while the quality of the firm cotton jersey knit make it feel considerably more substantial than typical T-shirts. The cut is lean and flattering as we have come to expect from Prorsum. It should also be noted that the printed motif of the yoke panel is precisely aligned with the neckline as seen in traditional shirting. The crew neckline is finished with a narrow stripe of self-fabric binding.

Overall, despite being over 10 years old, this piece demonstrates the remarkable consistency of Christopher Bailey's vision for Burberry. Its timelessly modern cut and beautiful detailing make it a wonderful basic piece that deftly combines versatility with Prorsum's heritage-inspired aesthetic.
