Ann Demeulemeester waistcoat from S/S 2011. In excellent used condition. RRP: £410

Waistcoats have been a perennial staple in Ann Demeulemeester collections for men and women since the label's inception. Versatile enough to be worn on their own in the summer or as layering pieces in the winter, Demeulemeester's waistcoats capture the brand's Edwardian-inspired aesthetic. This version from the S/S 2011 collection features an abstract print designed by Demeulemeester's son Victor Robyn, depicting rays of light coming through an open door. Although it is from the women's line, its style and sizing make it undeniably unisex.

The piece is crafted from two fabrics: The front is a dense cotton canvas with a vertical ribbed pattern. The fabric was originally white and then printed black; this creates subtle colour variations that complement its vintage finish. The back and interior are made from a textured cotton flatweave with a slightly irregular textured surface. The classic design features a five button closure; the front is cut slightly longer than the back for a dramatic effect. Demeulemeester's signature buckled straps can be used to adjust the waistcoats shape, and are cut extra long for a nonchalant look. The back is finished with three triangular slits on the hem that add subtle interest.

The back features a long vertical seam in the middle and long darts shape the silhouette. The buckles' hardware has a gunmetal finish, while the buttons on the front are made from genuine buffalo horn with beautiful natural markings. The interior is fully lined in Ann's signature viscose/acetate sateen twill which makes the waistcoat a pleasure to wear even without a T-shirt. A closer inspection reveals that the lining has been partially attached by hand.

This is a quintessential Ann Demeulemeester piece. While being versatile and easy to integrate in your wardrobe, its distinctive print makes a bold yet refined statement.
