Ann Demeulemeester 'East' jacket from S/S 2009. In brand new condition with tags and replacement buttons. The exterior pockets are sewn shut. Made in Portugal. RRP: £1195

Demeulemeester's creations often highlight the wearer's movement through an emphasis on softly draped cuts and exaggerated proportions. This distinctive 'East' jacket was the signature outerwear of the S/S 2009 collection and was shown in numerous runway looks. Its unstructured and carefully oversized design exemplifies the Belgian designer's preoccupation with ‘cutting nonchalance into clothes’.

The jacket is realised in a precious blend of 33% lyocell, 27% cotton, 26% silk and 14% linen. This unique combination of fibers gives a tremendous beauty to the fabric's detailed jacquard weave, featuring textured flowers and branches on a deep black satin base. The exceptional intricacy of the embroideries is impossible to capture on camera, lending a slightly three dimensional appearance to the 'Golden Age' inspired pattern. The visually arresting yet refined fabric complements the jacket's soft silhouette with wide lapels and an asymmetrical closure. The design combines Demeulemeester's signature tailoring with a subtly Eastern inspiration, evident in the voluminous cut of the sleeves. The front drapes nonchalantly when open and closes with an understated cotton ribbon. The back features a waistcoat-style strap that can be used to adjust the silhouette.

The piece is finished to a very high standard and exhibits Demeulemeester's typical attention to detail. The cuffs feature the designer's distinctive 'bell' shape that gently engulfs the hands, and are finished with five functional buttons made from genuine buffalo horn. The waist features two sleek welt pockets without flaps, while the back is finished with a short vent. The adjustable strap on the back can be concealed on the jacket's interior for a more streamlined look. On the partially lined interior, all exposed seams are expertly finished with tonal binding and the sleeves are lined in Demeulemeester's classic smooth striped viscose/acetate sateen.

Overall, this elegant piece is a wonderful manifestation of Demeulemeester's idiosyncratic vision. Its beautiful silhouette remains easy and comfortable while maintaining a flattering shape, while its luxurious fabric will make it a stand-out in any sophisticated wardrobe.
