Ann Demeulemeester sweater from A/W 2001-2002. In excellent used condition. Made in Belgium.

In his review of the A/W 2001 collection, Armand Limnander writes:

'Ann Demeulemeester's clothes have soul. With a predominantly black aesthetic dominating and practically every designer jumping on the tough-edge bandwagon, her subtle, richly textured designs appear particularly meaningful this season.'

This sweater is a deft demonstration of the fact that Demeulemeester's quintessential views on proportion and texture have changed little over the years. Although it was designed over a decade ago, it is distinguished in its elegant silhouette and effortless yet directional aesthetic.

Demeulemeester has often been praised for her exquisite fabrics, comprised of high quality fibers that are as luxurious as they are pleasant to touch and wear. The designer has stated that many of the materials she used were developed in-house, and this fine piece certainly lives up to such claims. The sweater is made from a substantial 90% merino wool/10% polyester yarn that is soft and textured. The deep black colour of the wool is given a unique depth by the addition of silver threads, that give it a barely perceptible sheen. Despite its age, the yarn exhibits no pilling and still feels very crisp. The yarn is loosely knit throughout, and particularly towards the upper body, subtly revealing what is worn underneath.

Unlike Ann Demeulemeester tops from recent years, the sweater has a slim cut that closely follows the lines of the body. Demeulemeester gives the narrow silhouette her characteristic nonchalance by combining slim fitting elements with looser shapes. The neckline is wide; the sleeves are extremely elongated and reach the cuffs; the shoulders are dropped. The knit features intricate variations around the armholes and shoulders. The neckline and cuffs have minimal finishing that produces an effortless unstructured drape.

Overall, this is a classic Ann Demeulemeester piece. Its streamlined aesthetic and beautiful materials make it a wardrobe staple you will reach for again and again.
