Christopher Bailey's A/W 2008-2009 collection for Burberry Prorsum was dedicated to classic 1960s British elegance. Heavy outerwear in beautiful autumn colours was paired with slim flared trousers and elegant textured knits. The designer described it as 'nostalgic with rich elegant textures, effortless silhouettes and faded sombre hues.' The fusion of elegant dandy silhouettes with a modern rock 'n roll edge resulted in a critical and commercial success, and one of the most beautiful Burberry menswear collections to date. Although strikingly different from each other, most runway outfits had one common element: the gloves. They were so coveted that they were re-issued for the women's collection that followed: Vogue's Leisa Barnett wrote 'Forget raiding the boyfriend's wardrobe; those gorgeous chunky-knit gloves were there.'
The yarn used for these gloves is a beautiful 52% silk/46% viscose blend in an elegant dark navy/grey colour that is described in the tags as 'drab ink'. The material is soft and stretchy, while the silk content gives it an amazing subtle luster. The gloves are made from two separate knits: First, the upper section features narrow ribbing that stacks when the gloves are worn for a nonchalant slouchy look. The palm section features an intricate crochet knit that needs to be seen up close to be truly appreciated. When worn, parts of the knit faintly expose the hand for a beautiful look that demonstrates the technique's spectacular detail.
Overall, these gloves are a truly marvelous accessory and demonstrate Christopher Bailey's tremendous commitment to craftsmanship. Their elegantly nonchalant styling will elevate any casual or formal outfit, while the painstaking effort that has been put into their creation makes them very special.
