Helmut Lang worker jacket from S/S 1997. In excellent used condition. Made in Italy.

Helmut Lang's output was rarely defined by seasonal themes. Design elements from early 1990s collections were often reworked and reiterated until the label's demise, highlighting Lang's emphasis on refinement rather than novelty. This worker-inspired piece was one of the designer's most popular 'Jeans' designs in the late 1990s. Originally introduced in S/S 1997, it was re-issued several seasons thereafter and was one of the key pieces of the seminal S/S 1998 collection (pictured). Its design is inspired by classic mid-century worker jackets while maintaining Lang's clean modernist lines.

The jacket is crafted from fine nylon in a deep black colour. With a crisp texture and a semi-matte surface, the plain woven fabric is ideal for spring/summer. The cut is very fitted with defined shoulders and elongated sleeves. The runway photos demonstrate this piece worn oversized by two sizes. The front has Lang's typical concealed 5-button closure with a simple turnover collar. The four large patch pockets have an expandable shape for increased capacity; the flap of the right chest pocket can carry a pen. Large rectangular patches on the elbows add simple utilitarian detail, while the cuffs and waist feature buttoned tabs. The unlined interior is finished with durable chain-stitched flat fell seams.

Although simple at first glance, the jacket's interesting fabrication and flattering cut give it a sharp refinement that is synonymous with Lang's revered and highly influential minimalist aesthetic.
