Helmut Lang tank top with transparent stripes from S/S 2000. In excellent used condition. Made in Italy.

While Lang's S/S 2000 runway presentation sought to emphasise airiness and fluidity through its simple shapes and translucent fabrics, Helmut Lang Jeans took a different direction. The cutting-edge streetwear shown on previous collections was refined to a new level of sophistication. Although these garments were not included in the runway presentation, they are certainly worth the attention of Helmut Lang collectors. A/W 1999's much-coveted biker pieces were reinterpreted in summer-weight materials, while the distinctive neck rest collar (inspired by the shape of travel pillows) became a prominent feature on both men's and women's outerwear. Unusual technical fabrics, harness straps, large cargo pockets and cut-out button plackets gave an aggressive edge to the garments.

This tank top is a fantastic demonstration of Lang's in-house development of unconventional fabrications. It is crafted from a unique linen jersey interrupted by stripes of transparent nylon. The white linen is opaque and has a slubby surface with beautiful texture variations, while the nylon elements are completely see-through. The pronounced contrast between the intertwined materials results in a beautiful and delicate effect that is unmistakably Helmut Lang. Interestingly, a pleasantly retro HL logo has been embroidered on the chest, adding a point of interest to the already intricate narrative of the piece.

The piece is constructed to a very high standard with several interesting features that set it apart from ordinary basics. The side seams of the torso spiral considerably towards the left, enhancing the elongated silhouette of the piece while creating a subtle point of interest. This construction has been one of Lang's hallmarks since the early 1990s. The asymmetry of the side seams is precisely reflected in the slightly diagonal direction of the fabric's stripes. The neckline and armholes are finished with strips of self-fabric binding, cut with perpendicular stripes to create a subtly decorative element.

Overall, this expertly crafted top is a beautiful garment that will surely make a bold statement. The way its fabric subtly reveals the wearer's body is nothing short of impressive and acts as a testament to the originality of Helmut Lang's highly influential vision.
