Raf Simons aran sweater from A/W 2006-2007. In excellent used condition. Made in Belgium.

Like the 'History of My World' collection it proceeded, A/W 2006 strayed from Simons's typical streetwear to a tailoring-oriented direction that was more in tune with traditional conceptions of the male wardrobe. This new direction, however, was accompanied by a heightened awareness of form and construction, and resulted in some of the most ground-breaking menswear Simons has produced in his career. Tim Blanks writes:

'Simons has made [peace] with his former bête noire—fashion itself. Backstage, after a show that was superbly focused on technique and distilled to a palette of black, white, and gray, he said so himself. "I really wanted to show fashion!" he yelped. From an opening salvo of ribbed knitwear (patterned, perhaps, like a bedspread he might remember from the village he grew up in) [...] to a huge doubled, how-did-he-do-that padded jacket, Simons paraded a series of pieces that are sure to edge their way to the top of shopping lists next fall. [...] All the pants were cigarette-slim and the emphasis was up top, with the neck a particular focus for funnel collars or hoods that massed around the throat. This had the effect of framing his young models' faces, romantically exalting their youth. And in that, at least, Simons was entirely consistent with his past.'

This iconic sweater was presented in look #1 on the runway show and is certainly one of the collection's most coveted designs. Beautifully crafted from soft and substantial virgin wool, the design has an intricate Aran-style pattern whose beauty and complexity needs to be felt to be fully appreciated. As to be expected from the visionary designer, Simons has not appropriated traditional Irish patterns but instead created his own hypermodern takes, characterised by finesse and precision. The patterns found in the piece range from intricate cross stitches to striking arrows and zigzags. A high stand-up shawl collar lends avant-garde elegance to the spectacular design. The cut is semi-fitted for a sharp yet effortless silhouette, with beautiful narrow sleeves.

While looking spectacular, the sweater is constructed to an exceptional standard. The winter-weight wool yarn is soft and pleasant to wear, yet maintains its shape without excessive pilling. Furthermore, the finishing is very precise with intricate border stitches around seams. Upon a closer inspection, it becomes evident that the patterns on the torso and sleeves continue seamlessly across panels, a feature that requires extensive patternmaking skills to achieve. Similarly, the waistline and cuffs are finished with ribbed trims with beautiful raised borders. Overall, the piece's high quality construction and robust material make it feel like soft armor when worn.

Combining exquisite craftsmanship with hard-edged precision, this rare sweater is certainly an exceptional find. It will certainly become your go-to piece when the situation demands both insulation and uncompromising style. Strongly recommended.
