Helmut Lang asymmetrical tank top from S/S 2003. In excellent used condition. Made in Italy.

In our view, S/S 2003 was one of the most sophisticated collections in Helmut Lang's career. Drawing inspiration from a diverse variety of sources ranging from 1990s clubwear, Seditionaries-style layering and technical surfing gear to traditional tailoring, he created a complex yet aesthetically harmonious world where radical deconstruction met luxe modernity. Many of the details that defined Lang's clubwear-cum-couture collections from the mid-1990s were present, highlighting his emphasis on long-term refinement rather than seasonal novelty. This top was one of the collection's signature pieces, being the focal point of numerous runway looks. With his renown talent for subversive detail, Lang has used an intricate pattern and asymmetrical elements to deconstruct the classic tank top and create a spectacular statement piece.

The narrow silhouette is accentuated by the asymmetrical construction featuring side seams that subtly spiral towards the left. The front is crafted using a complex patchwork of curved panels that have been screenprinted by hand prior to their assembly. The irregular shapes of the abstract linear graphics lend an ambiguously beautiful point of interest to the piece that is quintessential Lang. The back hem has a triangular shape that unexpectedly extends well below the waist length of the front, resulting in an aggressive silhouette that is vaguely reminiscent of military outerwear.

The top's iconic looks are matched by its thoughtful finishing that decidedly sets it apart from typical jersey basics. The fabric is soft cotton jersey in a grey marl hue; its slightly flecked appearance pleasantly complements the irregular texture of the deep red prints. The side seams finish with nautical-inspired slits (a typical feature of Helmut Lang T-shirts), while the wide crew neckline and armholes are finished with self-fabric binding.

An extremely rare piece, this top exemplifies Lang's rare ability to bestow couture sophistication to the most basic garments. With its beautiful graphic elements and directional silhouette, it will make a bold yet sophisticated statement.
