Helmut Lang workwear shirt from A/W 1998-1999. In excellent used condition. Made in Italy.

1998 was a very important year for Helmut Lang. The company relocated its offices from Vienna to Manhattan, making it the first fashion house to change continent, while the runway presentations move from Paris to New York. Later that year, helmutlang.com was launched and A/W 1998-1999 was the first fashion collection to be presented online. Besides these influential firsts, A/W 1998-1999 is seen as one of Lang's seminal collections, showcasing the first major exploration of the abstract and layered streetwear that became synonymous with his late 90s output. The main source of inspiration was contemporary military uniforms, which had been a recurrent theme in Lang's designs since the decade's beginnings. Still, unlike previous seasons where the appropriation of military forms was straightforward and clear-cut, A/W 1998-1999 showcased a variety of unique garments whose aesthetic, detailing and execution were characteristically Lang.

Part of the Helmut Lang Jeans line, this shirt is a slightly more hard-wearing take on Lang's tailor made shirts. The fabric is high quality cotton twill that has been washed and slightly distressed to give it a vintage finish. Smooth against the skin and yet substantial, it allows for the shirt to be worn as a light jacket. In addition to its fabrication, this shirt exhibits a few sartorial differences to classic Helmut Lang shirts. Instead of the typical pocket, Lang has opted for a pleasantly retro HL logo on the chest. Likewise, the back is finished with a box pleat instead of side pleats. The cut is Lang's classic shape which maintained the ease of a full cut shirt without additional bulk, resulting in an archetypal masculine look that is precise and timeless.

Like all Helmut Lang shirts, the construction of this piece is thoughtful and precise. The mother-of-pearl button closure leads up to a button-down point collar with a strong yet subtle shape, while the logo that decorates the chest has been embroidered in contrasting white thread. The sleeves have a sharp two-piece construction, enhancing the shirt's structured look. The chunky barrel cuffs are adjustable and finished with two precise pleats. The box pleat on the upper back is quite wide, producing a beautiful effect. All interior seams have flat fell finishing that prevents them from undesirable fraying, thereby ensuring the longevity of the shirt.

An iconic staple from one of Helmut Lang's most cherished collections, this classic shirt makes a subtle and sophisticated statement that is synonymous with the Austrian designer's timelessly relevant heritage.
