The clothes in Burberry Prorsum's S/S 2009 collection were described by Christopher Bailey as 'crumpled classics', which explains the timeworn and softly rugged aesthetic that permeated the runway. Inspired by Derek Jarman's famous garden cottage in Dungeness, Kent, Bailey presented an eclectic mix of soft outerwear and vintage-inspired knitwear in an earthy palette. The result was a gently melancholic and laid-back collection, for which Bailey envisioned how Burberry garments would change upon years of wear and exposure to the elements. This precious cardigan is made from a lusciously soft pure silk yarn, and has been dip dyed by hand to produce a subtle rain-soaked effect. Although it is from the men's line, its proportions make it undoubtedly unisex.
Like most Prorsum tops, the cardigan has a form-fitting cut with a defined upper body and slim, elongated sleeves. Eight buttons made from silver metal with an antique finish close the front, and feature Burberry Prorsum logo engravings. Furthermore, the knit is flawlessly executed. A sharp micro-rib stitch gives a sharpness to nonchalant design, and is finished entirely seamlessly. The waist and cuffs are finished in a tight stockinette stitch and are part of the same knit as the body, resulting in a natural drape without excessive bulk. Likewise, the Prorsum label on the neck is attached by hand to prevent the seams from showing on the outside when the knit stretches.
A timeless, versatile and effortlessly luxurious piece, this cardigan is finished to an exceptional standard. The sharp cut, beautiful fabrication and unique colourway will make this an essential spring/summer staple.
