2006 Silk/Virgin Wool Belted Sweater with Pleated Detail

A/W 2006-2007 was one of Christopher Bailey's first 'powerhouse' collections and the designer brought a more majestic element to his signature designs. Flawlessly constructed silhouettes and semi-formal styling were subversively complemented by punk-inspired leather accessories and subtle splashes of colour and pattern. This sweater is a wonderful demonstration of the subtle complexity of Christopher Bailey's womenswear designs from this period, that is seen by many as his most prolific. 

The sweater is crafted from a fine 30% silk/70% wool knit. Lightweight, soft and of exceptional quality, the yarn will age very well over time without pilling. The proportions are narrow throughout, with a thin belt (inspired by traditional trench coats) complementing the silhouette. A pleated horizontal band placed across the chest creates movement while giving definition to the wearer's bust. On the shoulders, the sleeve caps have been hand-gathered to produce a beautiful raised shape. 

A closer inspection of the piece reveals that no compromise has been made in its manufacture. Each individual piece has been precisely knit with a fully fashioned construction (meaning that it has been knit to its exact shape in a process similar to hand knitting), down to the belt.This process is much more expensive than typical cut-and-sew knitwear and undoubtedly superior in terms of longevity. Likewise, the leather buckle has been hand-edged like all traditionally made leather goods. Finally, the crew neck, hemline and cuffs are finished with ribbing.
