This exceptionally rare T-shirt was released as part of a limited capsule collection that commemorated the 10 year anniversary of the Raf Simons brand (1995-2005). Available exclusively at luxury deparment store Isetan in Tokyo, Japan, the collection was part of a wider series of events that celebrated the Simons's 10 years as a fashion designer, including the Raf Simons Redux book and his exposition at Florence's Giardini di Boboli. A different Raf Simons label was developed for the collection and all garments were manufactured in extremely limited quantities.
The piece is decorated with one of the most recognisable images in Simons's iconography, depicting the designer's assistant and muse Robbie Snelders wearing nothing but a motorcycle helmet like the ones worn on the A/W 1998 'Radioactivity' runway. The photograph is entitled 'Isolated heroes No. 1: Robbie' and was taken in 2000 by Simons himself in Antwerp. Although it was published in Raf Simons Redux to critical acclaim, this T-shirt is the only garment to ever feature it. It is also interesting to note that although Snelders has acquired several music-related tattoos over the years, the only one visible in this photo is the Sisters of Mercy logo on his left shoulder.
The T-shirt is cut oversized and elongated for a dramatic silhouette with a narrow crew neck. The fabric is a high quality cotton jersey with a soft drape and silky texture. The fabric is slightly threadbare and has a subtle mercerised treatment that gives it a faint luster. The neckline is finished with thin ribbed trim.
An exceptionally hard-to-find piece, this T-shirt captures one of the defining early moments of Simons's brand. While possessing significant historical value, its effortless silhouette and iconic print make it versatile and easy to wear.
