S/S 2011 was another grand success for Burberry and Christopher Bailey. Many of A/W 2010-2011's signature pieces were stripped down and decorated with leather and metal trims. Tim Blanks writes:
'Christopher Bailey's trip to the Burberry archives last season helped him to the best men's collection of his career with the company, and he hit pay dirt again with Spring's return visit. A stash of early twentieth-century biker gear designed by the very forward-thinking Thomas Burberry gave him the idea for his "heritage biker" collection. It was another spectacular outing. Bailey may have made his rep with collections that leaned toward wistful melancholia, but the harder he goes, the better the clothes seem to get. [...] Fall's precise military-influenced tailoring was still obvious in khaki trenches and naval officer's coats, but here they'd been given details like leather epaulettes and studded belts.' (our emphasis)
This extremely rare one-off showpiece was not showcased on Burberry's runway or showroom, and was manufactured for one of the house's VIP clients. Its avant-garde design combines the aesthetic of military parade tunics from the early the 20th century with the season's razor-sharp biker detailing. A similar version to this piece was worn by One Night Only frontman and ex-Burberry model George Craig during the band's performance at the 2010 Reading festival.
The cut is sharp and structured with handsome narrow shoulders, slim sleeves and a somewhat shorter length that creates a rock 'n' roll edge. A short stand-up collar, six-button cuffs and four ornate pockets remind us of the piece's military heritage. At the same time, luxurious leather epaulettes create a strong shoulder line while chunky metal studs add a directional edge. The fabric is a high quality 42% linen/58% cotton twill with a slightly irregular crisp texture and faintly lustrous surface. The hard-wearing material will form subtle fades over time to further enhance the character of this iconic jacket. The style is finished with oversized regimental matte buttons engraved with the Burberry Prorsum logo.
The extremely elaborate finishing of the piece demonstrates Christopher Bailey's capability to create stunning modern classics. The front and double-vented back are constructed from several panels that create a beautiful three-dimensional shape that flatters the contours of the body. Rows of thick reinforcement stitches subtly highlight the sharp lines of the construction while ensuring its durability. The leather epaulettes are finely hand-edged like all traditionally made leather goods, while all metal details are painted black in line with the jacket's directional aesthetic. While large metal loops decorate the sides of the waist, the jacket is not meant to be worn with a belt. The interior is fully lined in black viscose jacquard for the body and striped viscose/cupro for the sleeves. Prorsum's signature oversized pull chain adorns the neck.
A spectacular demonstration of Christopher Bailey's heritage-driven vision, this supremely crafted piece will add a touch of aggressive luxury to any sophisticated casual outfit.
