Vogue.co.uk's review of the S/S 2006 collection outlines:

"I wanted to go back to feel the essence of Burberry, that sense of aristocracy and the military," said Christopher Bailey of his spring/summer 2006 menswear collection. And, opening with a trench, he couldn't fail to bring the strengths of Burberry's past to the forefront of our minds. There was a modern, preppy mood with checked ties and pale scarves worn with matching suits that kept things modern and very much alive.

Although the runway show's traditionalist styling resulted in a largely forgettable presentation, a closer inspection of the individual pieces indicates that a new level of sophistication had been achieved for Prorsum menswear. The tailoring was sharp as ever, while the development of custom hardware and trims brought a new level of luxury to the house. This rare showpiece is an ample demonstration of Christopher Bailey's eye for detail, featuring an exceptional cut and iconic leather details that appeared on Burberry runways half a decade later.

Inspired by military tunics from World War I, the classic design features a six-button closure, four ornate patch pockets and a structured shirt-like collar that can stand up. Similar pieces have been the focal points of numerous Burberry runways, including A/W 2008 and S/S 2011 (pictured). The narrow cut of the shoulders is pronounced by stiff bridle leather epaulettes. The fabric is a robust 60% linen/40% cotton twill with a herringbone pattern in a beautiful midnight blue colour. Structured and hard-wearing, the fabric has a similar texture to raw denim and will fade well with wear.

The construction and finishing of this piece are pristine and would satisfy even the most discerning customer. The striped pattern of the fabric is flawlessly matched throughout, complementing the precise geometrical shapes of the pockets and button placket. The fabric is thoughtfully placed horizontally on the cuffs and collar for subtle contrast. The buttons are made from genuine buffalo horn and have been hand sewn. Likewise, the leather epaulettes are traditionally hand-edged. The unlined interior is finished with perfectly executed flat fell seams, while the seams on the shoulders and sleeves feature tonal cotton binding.

Combining Burberry's regimental heritage with razor-sharp modernity, this versatile piece from the Prorsum archives will be a handsome addition to any sophisticated wardrobe.
