Balmain military parka from S/S 2010. In excellent used condition. Made in Italy. RRP: ¥187,950 (£1102)

For Balmain's initial mens' collections, Christophe Decarnin sought to create a timeless wardrobe that combined the maison's hard-edged glamour with his love for vintage military garments. The result was a series of pristine staple pieces, distinguished in their superb craftsmanship and attention to detail. For S/S 2010 (the menswear line's first summer collection), Decarnin took this this hybrid approach a step further through the use of hand-embroidered stumpwork (raised embroidery) and military-inspired decorations that gave an elegant old-world element to the classic masculine designs. The 'T210' parka is an iconic Balmain piece that has been issued for both winter and summer collections. It captures Decarnin's roughly elegant vision, with an uncompromising cut and excellent detailing.

The design is inspired by the classic M-51 parka, featuring a concealed closure, drawstrings on the waist and a fishtail hem. Upon a closer inspection, however, it is evident that many of the M-51's original features have been updated in line with Decarnin's rugged aesthetic. The aggressive neckline features a heavy double zipper, which can be opened to reveal an oversized hood. The narrow shoulders are framed by chunky epaulettes, while raised embroidery appliques adorn the left chest and sleeve. These exquisite decorations are done entirely by hand to an extremely high standard. Unlike classic parkas, the silhouette is very flattering with high armholes and an adjustable waist. The sleeves have an impressive articulated construction that gives them a sharp tailored shape. The fabric is a smooth reinforced cotton with a muted camo pattern. It has been overdyed and distressed for a deep colour and softly worn-in feel.

Overall, the construction of this piece is flawless and it is easy to see that attention has been paid to every detail. The somewhat draped appearance of the front is the result of careful tailoring, where excess of fabric is left to form gentle folds. All hardware is Italian made (Fiocchi buttons and Lampo zippers) and feels very substantial and luxurious. The zippers have chunky military-inspired pulls, while their polished silver finish complements the vintage look. The waist is finished with two large pockets with a double flap construction that makes them secure and water-resistant. The cuffs feature concealed elastic tabs to adjust their width. Unlike normal pack-away hoods where storage is limited to a small neck compartment, the hood is stored between the outer shell and lining, keeping it crease-free. The interior is partially lined with vintage textured cotton.

This parka has all the credentials for becoming a spring outerwear staple: Its finishing is impeccable and exceptionally luxurious, while its timelessly masculine style is easy to integrate in a variety of wardrobes.
