IT 42: Best for a 29" or 30" waist.

Helmut Lang bondage trousers from S/S 2004. In excellent used condition with tags. Made in Italy. RRP: $495 (£301)

S/S 2004 is one of Helmut Lang's most famous seasons and many of its captivating designs are now part of modern fashion history. One of the collection's strongest themes was the' 'iridescent color' and 'lightness of structure' of dragonflies. Lang's typical sharp silhouettes were intensified by abstracted shapes, elastic straps, cut-outs and unexpected splashes of reflective materials. Channeling the collection's intricately layered aesthetic, this pair of trousers has a form-fitting cut and a streamlined design which is given an unexpected touch through the addition of the season's signature jersey trims across the front. Although the trousers are from the women's line, their style and proportions make them undeniably unisex.

The trousers have a streamlined design with a slim leg and elongated silhouette that closely follows the lines of the body. The front has a flat construction with a narrow waistband, a sleek concealed closure and two quarter pockets. The back has a pleated construction and buttoned welt pockets. The look is finished with sharp leg creases. Most interestingly, pieces of raw cut cotton jersey adorn the front, connecting the waist with the inner leg. The trousers' minimalist aesthetic is complemented by their high quality fabric, a stretch cotton with a vintage grainy appearance. Its 2% elastane content makes them very comfortable to wear despite the slim cut.

The waistband is canvassed to prevent stretching and lined with Lang's signature rows of contrasting fabrics with a branded embroidery. Likewise, the pockets are lined in bronze cotton. The fly closes with a zip, a single button and a hook-and-eye closure to prevent stretching. The front and back pockets feature subtly perceptible reinforcing.

Helmut Lang's sophisticated approach to tailoring was conducive in transforming classic forms into sophisticated and refined runway pieces. Lang's bondage-inspired detailing is one of his most iconic touches and this rare piece could be part of someone's personal wardrobe as much as it could be displayed in a modern art museum.
