2000 Small Camera Bag with Transparent Plastic Detail

Helmut Lang camera bag from S/S 2000. In excellent used condition. Made in Japan. 

Helmut Lang held several license agreements for the production and distribution of Lang's designs from 1988 until the label's demise. One of the most interesting was the partnership with Onward Kashiyama* to create a range of bags and travel accessories exclusively for the Japanese market. Entirely manufactured in Japan to an exceptionally high standard, the collection was largely inspired by military surplus gear and clubbing accessories and realised in hard-wearing materials such as ballistic nylon and heavy coated leather. 

Designed with both form and function in mind, this directional camera bag has two main storage compartments with zipped closures. The upper compartment is decorated with a transparent plastic insert that playfully reveals its contents, in line with Lang's 'covertly perverse' approach. The lower compartment is decorated with a subtle Helmut Lang logo and its interior features a thick elastic strap (similar to the details of Lang's bondage garments). The two compartments can be connected to increase storage space. The bag's main material is a densely woven bonded nylon with a dull luster.

Combining Helmut Lang's distinctive aesthetic with luxurious finishing, the piece is constructed to a very high standard with several interesting details. The thin strap used to carry the bag is adjustable and removable. An invisible pocket is found on the exterior, which can be used for money or small documents. Reinforced piping gives definition to the edges of the bag, while all interior seams are finished with grosgrain binding. The messenger strap features heavy snap hooks while all zippers have chunky branded pull tabs. 

This bag captures the essence of Helmut Lang's streetwear, where hard-edged militarism meets abstract forms and innovative materials. Its utilitarian details make it ideal for everyday use while adding a sophisticated point of visual interest.
