1999 Resinated Cotton Waist Pack with Strap Closure

The late 1990s/early 2000s mark an important transition in Helmut Lang's work. His designs are increasingly becoming more layered and abstract, often with subtle references to subcultural styles. S/S 1999 was an important demonstration of this transition; although the runway styling was rather minimalist, many of the garments that were showcased were subversively adorned with interior harnesses and asymmetric details. On the accessories front, raver-inspired storage packs with elastic straps were shown on the arms, legs and around the waist. This unconventional yet versatile bag was one of the collection's characteristic unisex pieces. 

The bag is crafted from a densely woven cotton/nylon poplin with a polyurethane coating that creates a slightly waxed finish. The front has a large flap with a velcro closure, while a silver metal patch engraved with the Helmut Lang logo decorates the right side. The interior features two compartments, one of which is zipped. A long elastic strap is used to secure the bag to the body with two metal-D rings. The extra long length of the strap allows it to hang well below the waist, creating the layered look that has become synonymous with Helmut Lang's bondage work.
